Welcome Famlee

At Brekwus, we bring the bold, soulful flavors of the Gullah Geechee culture to life through thoughtfully crafted breakfast and brunch dishes. Inspired by the rich culinary traditions of the Lowcountry, our food truck is a mobile celebration of heritage, hospitality, and homegrown flavor.

Founded by Sonya Mayes, a seasoned restaurateur with over 30 years of experience, Brekwus blends tradition, experience, and passion. Sonya’s roots run deep in the Southern kitchen—where recipes were passed down, stories were shared, and culture lived in every bite. Her love for Gullah Geechee cuisine drives everything we do—from curating authentic menus to connecting with the communities we serve. With her hands-on leadership, Brekwus is more than a food truck—it’s a heartfelt tribute to cultural preservation through food.

Our name, Brekwus—a Gullah Geechee word for "breakfast"—honors our mission: to preserve and share the deep-rooted foodways of a people whose influence shaped the South. Signature dishes like Shrimp & Grits, Okra Stew, and handmade Buttermilk Biscuits are crafted with care and served with intention. Every plate tells a story—rich with history, soul, and Southern comfort.

Whether we’re parked at a festival, church event, job site, or community center, Brekwus creates a welcoming space where food becomes a bridge between culture and connection. We proudly source fresh, local ingredients, supporting sustainable practices and local farmers whenever possible.

In addition to our food truck, Brekwus offers full catering services for weddings, family reunions, corporate gatherings, and special events. Our customized menus bring warmth, authenticity, and unforgettable flavor to every occasion.

With Brekwus, you’re not just getting a meal—you’re experiencing a movement that celebrates Southern brunch, soul food traditions, and the enduring legacy of the Gullah Geechee people. Join us and taste the history, one plate at a time.
